Stock non-bose unit slowly dying ? Anyone use ASWC for steering controls ?

I think my stock unit is slowly dying. The casette player always ERRs even after cleaning the heads etc. My audio gets staticky, and the audio completely fades out, and currently the sound comes more from the right side compared to the left side, with no balance.

There is a head unit coming on sale for $40 on black friday, and its a single DIN unit. I was thinking about putting that in. Ive heard people say that the amp starts dying on these factory units. Also, anyone use the ASWC steering controls module ? does it work fine ?

Do you have an Amp in the rear deck ? I thought only the Bose setups have anything in the rear deck.

OK, let me be constructive. The scratchy sound and left/right imbalance suggests 2 things: the internal components of the HU are failing due to bad/corroded connections, or your harness may be losing its conenction. You could un-plug the radio, clean the harness contacts, then re-plug in the radio to clean up the contacts.

As you were already looking into, you could replace the radio. You should look on ebay for OEM double din Nissan head units from newer Nissans. They should be plug and play. You should verify, of course.

I haven't really looked at the Ads but I'd bet there will be some sweet deals on Black Friday. You may even be able to pick up a Double Din pretty cheap if that's what you'd rather have. I put a Single Din Pioneer in mine about 6 months after I bought it. I personally never spent the money on the interface for the steering wheel controls and just got used to them not functioning. If you do decide to go aftermarket there is a thread around here about getting your trip computer to work, it's a super simple fix. Look it up before you change HU's so you only have to tear the dash apart once!

I have the ASWC on my Pioneer AVIC unit. Works great. There should be an install thread around here somewhere. Just check metraonline.com to make sure whatever head unit you buy is compatible. I'm pretty sure most of them are as long as it has a remote plug in the back.

re

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah i am looking on buying one on black friday. I was in best buy today, and played around with the one i want to get. good clean sound.

I dont know why i would have corroded connection for the HU..i just think the HU itself is dying. It always has power, but the sound just goes away. I use casette for my casette adapter since i have no AUX.

Which type of newer head unit are you talking about ? I dont know if they would actually fit.....

I will have the ASWC installed by a shop most likely...my friend owns one so it should be relatively cheap. I am going to find the thread for the trip computer fix !

The trip computer fix is just one wire on the harness goes to ground. The ASWC instructions actually have you ground this wire anyway so there isn't much to fix.

re

picked up a DEH-x3500UI over the weekend as my replacement. I am going to install it myself, since i cant locate a ASWC around here for a good price. i looked over information on it, and i dont think its that hard to connect to my car.

Ill let you know once im done. in the meanwhile, anyone know a place that has cheap dash kits ??
Thanks

That's pretty much all the pertinent information you'll need. I suggest you print out what applies to your vehicle/radio combo and have it with you during the install. It's not as scary as it looks at first.

re

I already saw that, but thanks for it !

Ok so what i am trying to say is,

you have the wiring harness, and the harness that connects to your radio.

When connecting the new harness to the Radio harness, Should i go ahead and connect the ASWC to the radio harness ? i.e take both ASWC, and HARNESS, and crimp them, and crimp to the RADIO harness.

Does that make sense ?
