Help!! 6MT tranny Leak
Hey All,
Changed out my 6MT last weekend with one I picked up. Tranny seems good, but now I have a leak.
It's not coming from the axle seals. It's dry above the very bottom of teh tranny.
Everything is tight and I hope it's the plug, but because I am driving it pulls back about an inch from the plug.
Has anyone seem a leak from the case and if it is the case what do I do??
Am I screwed?? I paid a buddy to put it in and I hope I don't have to pull it back out.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Bert

Hard to say, you need to do a little more investigation. You probably already checked the following, but just in case...Leak could be from a number of places-from a seal (axles, input shaft), fill plug too loose or washer needs replacement, or from the seam between the bell housing and transmission case (RTV) or from one of the retaining bolts that hold the casings together. There's a vertical access port that should have a little cover on it at the bottom of the tranny on the bellhousing-you can check to see if there's fluid inside the bellhousing, which would likely point to an input shaft seal leak (but fluid could also be oil from the rear main seal, check if it's oil or gear lubricant). If it's the casings seam, make sure the bolts are tightened to correct torque. If it does happen to be a leak from between the casings, the only thing I can think you might try is to drain the tranny, wipe down the seam with grease/oil remover, apply a bead of RTV on the outer edge of the seam and let it cure in a heated space. Last- I'd double check the axle seals if you didn't replace them before installation and verify the driver side axle is fully seated.
EDIT-Just re-read your post and you mentioned "it's dry above the very bottom of the tranny". I'm thinking input shaft seal or casing leak then.
