U 1000 code - faulty communication circuit

Help! I own a 2002 Nissan Maxima GLE and have an issue with the MIL – “Service Engine Soon” light. It’s giving a U 1000/1001 code that will not clear. I gutted up and went to the Nissan dealer and asked them to troubleshoot the problem, and brought a copy of Technical Bulletin NTB-6009a. This refers to a “CAN” – communication circuit problem – a short (?). After following the TSB, cleaning and re-tightening the ECM ground connections, there was still a hard fault. They reported that “after performing a ping point test (ppt), there was no communication with the TCM”, and they recommended replacing it. This is a very expensive option!!!
I shelled out my $300, but then spoke with the service departments of two other Nissan dealers. I was told that if the TCM (trans control module) was not working properly, I would “definitely have drivability issues”. The car runs great, there is no transmission slippage, and I get good gas mileage! The ATF looks and smells fine. My impression is that there is a short that they weren’t able to find, and they need to keep looking before slapping on this costly part. I have been driving the car over a year with that U1000 code and no trans problems at all!!! What do you experts think???

If it had "U" codes, the car would be undriveable.
