You know, that was the first thing I did when this started. Unfortunately, even the world's leading authorities tend to have fairly ambiguous definitions only suggesting that an investment "most often" results in financial gain but does not limit it as such.

then what's not investment?
using your logic and definition, i am sure i can say all the money and time and whatever i ever spent in my life are all investment.
can one of your guys gimme an example what is NOT considered investment?

Return On Investment

Many people use the term ROI to articulate what they got back. From what ever they spent. No one is wrong is this, it's just symantics.

The ROI of a fiancial venture is money.
The ROI of spending time with your kids is (hopefully) a well-rounded child.
The ROI of working out is a better body.

The ROI of a CAR is transportation. (But how you are transported opens a can of worms. Getting from A - B in Civic is a totally different ballgame than getting A - B in a M3. Hence above and beyond transportation the ROI becomes; Joy, thrilling, ...)
