Tune with 3-3.5 inch intake?

Hey guys. I know your supposed to tune our cars (5.5gen) with a 3-3.5 inch intake set up but why? Is it simply just because your throwing more air into the engine? Or is there more to it? And will my SAFC2 be able to tune that set up by just tweaking my current tune or do i have to adjust anything else? I did research but couldent find a clear answer on if my SAFC2 can tune that set up. Thanks for all the responses in advance!

Basically your ecu can't compensate with fuel to make up for the added air volume. That's how I understand it anyway.

I believe SAFC2 can tune that set up but the gurus will be in here soon...this might be a better question suited for the All Motor section of the forum though.

The Maf (mass air flow meter) is one of the most important sensors, as it is responsible for letting the ecu know how much air is coming into the motor so that it can compensate with the right amount of fuel. Your stock Maf is calibrated to "read" how much air is moving through the 3" diameter maf housing. Once you swap the housing for a larger one (like a 3.5 or 4") your throwing the sensor reading all off. The vafc tunes using the maf voltage, thats why its great for this kind of mod.

The maf is set up to read air in a tube of X diameter. If you change that diameter, it has not got any idea that you did so. So if you increase the diameter of the tube, there is unmetered air passing by the sensor and it hasn't got a clue. So you will run lean all the time.
