Oil consumption

Just bought a used 2000 Maxima. According to the service records I received from the previous owner, the car was using maybe a quart of oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. The car has 23,000 miles on it. While that's not bad, I do wonder about other owner's experiences.

Thats seems a little high, not completely un-normal in other cars, but for a Maxima, it seems like either burning oil somewhere or leaky piston rings.

But actually can be a whole rack of things, I mean the valve cover gaskets could be bad, the list could be as long as a book.

Get it checked out. See if you notice Oil burning from the exhaust, "white/bluish smoke"

two things you can do...

a compression test and a Blackstone Oil Labs test ($18) which will tell you if you have a serious problem with the internal. I would look for leaks first. it isnt uncommon to use 1 qt. It would bother me too if mine did it, I understand.

Sounds like a little much to me too, I have 70,000 miles on my 2K and it MAYBE burns 8-10 oz's every 3-4000 miles.

The Max still feels like new at 70,000.. I think as this engine breaks in and "loosens up" it gets stronger. I have had the normal squeaks that we ALL complain about and at about 15,000 miles had a motor mount replaced - electronic controlled and made a whining noise after the car was shut-off. It's 85% highway miles for me so wear and tear isn't too bad, I am looking at replacing brake pads now and just put a set of Michelin Pilot's on it - but no major problems. I hope to have this thing paid off the end of this summer and will have to decide if I should sell it or drive it into the ground. I traded a 96' Maxima with 98,000 on it for my 2K that I had NO problems with at all - that's why I bought another one There are nicer, faster, and cheaper cars out there but in my opinion, after putting over 150,000 miles between two Maximas, there is no better value out there than our Maxima's. Just bought a 01' LE Pathfinder last summer, I hope it's as good to me as the Max has been.
