airbag light - spiral cable?

finally I was able to catch the error code with self diagnosis.... flashes are 1 long follow by 2 shorts... according to the service manual -

1. Visually check the wiring harness connection.
2. Replace the harness if it has visible damage.
3. Replace the spiral cable.
4. Replace driver air bag module.
(Before disposal, it must be deployed.)
5. Replace the diagnosis sensor unit.
6. Replace the related harness.

the wiring harness looks fine.. I have not taken the airbag off yet, but, after I cleared the code, I can get the code back just by turning the steering wheel while the car is sitting... also the cruise control button only works when I turn the steering to a certain position.

Do we have enough evidence to suggest that the spiral cable is bad?

thanks.

bot a used spiral cable for $65.... put it in following the service manual... light is gone and cruise control is working again!

when i took the old one out, I noticed that it was NOT in the neutral position.... I suspect the last guy who fixed my steering problem couple years ago probably did a lousy job there.

anyway - all is good now.

that spiral cable you're talking about called the clock Spring, they usually would be the suspect of the airbag light. Keep in mind if you are going to replace it, be sure that you disconnect the battery and leave it for at least 20 minutes, since the airbag has a capacitor that has some residual power, til it drain off, then you can access the steering wheel otherwise you can potentially harm yourself from the airbag going off.
