Wow it affects Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Mazda.

Figures I have a Nissan, Toyota and a Mazda within that age.

Nissan is recalling 2001 to 2003 Maximas, Pathfinders, Sentras, Infiniti I35s and Infiniti QX4s in the U.S

When I read the article I thought it was interesting that 00-04 Maximas as well as a few Infiniti's are included, but not the i30/i35's. Maybe our airbags were sourced to a different manufacturer?

I didn't read anything about the 2000 Maxima having this issue in the CNN article. But the Chicagotribune says the issues started in the 2000 Year Maximas. Did anyone else notice this?

and for Infinitis

I doubt reputable news sources like CNN would not check resources. Can I get a mod to add this to general info?

These recalls are getting ridiculous. 1st, Toyota had to lose millions b/c some senile old people didn't know how to drive and the govt milked it. Now, some airbags are ever so slightly defective, no reports of injuries (read: non life threatening, ppl get hurt by airbags all the time) and another massive recall.

This country really has to stop this. Circling the drain, indeed. I guess we all need to drink out of sippy cups, too.

There's far worse things that need recalled and prosecuted besides this bull****.

CNN are tools, just a FYI. They're no different than the others. They report how they're told regardless of facts.

Agreed... I despise CNN

Back on topic... I've yet to receive a letter from Nissan about it, so i'll wait until then, since they're going to get bombarded with phone calls and visits at the dealerships about it.

Tough luck for Takata, great company. Air bags are dangerous as it is. A childhood friend of mine lost an eye due to chemicals that came from a deployment. Sad story because she was an attractive girl....

I like how CNN said, "For Toyota, the recall is another blow to its carefully cultivated reputation for quality."

Yet here you see:

August 2010 - Toyota recalls 1.3 million Corolla and Matrix cars from 2005-2008 model years in the United States and Canada.
October 2010 - Toyota will recall a total of about 1.66 million vehicles, mostly in Japan, the United States and China, for problems involving brakes and fuel pumps.
January 2011 - Toyota says it will recall more than 1.7 million vehicles worldwide, bringing its total for recalls to nearly 16 million since late 2009 and dealing a blow to its efforts to restore its reputation for quality.
October 2012 - Toyota announces a recall of more than 7.4 million vehicles worldwide as a faulty power window switch is a potential fire hazard, the latest in a series of setbacks for Japan's biggest automaker. Toyota has battled its way back from multiple difficulties since 2008, including a series of recalls involving more than 10 million of its vehicles in 2009-11, and supply chains crippled by the tsunami in Japan and floods in Thailand.
November 2012 - Toyota says it will recall 2.77 million vehicles worldwide, including some of its popular Prius hybrid cars, for steering and water pump problems.
January 2013 - Toyota announces a recall of nearly 1.3 million cars globally for two separate defects, including 752,000 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles in the United States to fix airbags that could be deployed inadvertently.

Don't forget the recall on the Tundra's that had bad frame rusting problem.

Toyota's aren't made like they used to be. The only thing I consider what is better now than back then is their rustproofing. My aunt had a mid-80's Tercel hatchback she put over 300K miles on, but had to junk it because it was rusting out so bad. Such a shame because it was a great running and driving car.

Interesting... does 5 and 5.5 gen passenger airbags come out of the dash easily, or does the entire dashpad have to come out with it?

seems odd having a recall on 10+ year old cars, especially if this defect hasn't been a problem for 10+ years, what's the chance of a problem in the few years they have left?

That was my first thought. I cant remember the last time I heard of a recall on cars older than 4/5 years.

Assuming this goes through. What would then be the action/response? Are they going to want to just fix it or buy the car back like Toyota did on some of their older trucks before

The cost to replace it will be more than my Max is worth. Any guesses on the cost to replace driver and passenger airbag? My guess is $1500-$2000.

This is the reply I got from Infiniti Consumer Affairs about the Takata airbag recall:

Dear xxxxx xxxxxxxx,

A review of our records indicates that the above-referenced vehicle is not currently involved in any recalls or service campaigns.

In regards to the Takata recall, Infiniti will make a specific campaign announcement within the next 30 days. If your vehicle is affected, you will be notified. No campaign announcement has been made at this time.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please call us directly at 1-800-662-6200 (Option 7).

Safety defects don't have a warranty period, the same is true for manufacturing defects. It differs a bit from state to state but in most cases the manufacturer is on the hook for the life of the car. One exception is when a manufacturer like GM goes into bankruptcy, when they came out of bankruptcy all prior obligations were voided.

Keep in mind this "defect" would only become obvious if the airbag deployed. The service writers at my Nissan dealership have been swamped with calls about this, they think the details are still a few weeks away.

OK, but what's "the life of the car", 10 years? 20? 50? 100? Are we going to see Edsel recalls too, after all, there are still some of those on the road!

Some would argue that the Edsel should've been recalled.

I don't know if there's a limit on how long a manufacturer is on the hook for defects. Let's use a modicum of common sense, okay?

FYI: I've had the driver's side seat belt in my '02 Maxima replaced three times under warranty when it would no longer retract properly. It might be specific to California but apparently the seat belts are also warranted for the "life of the car".

Im not too worried about it. I got into a bit of a tangle with a 4th gen a few months back at an intersection, airbags deployed (at least from what I can tell) normally.

That being said:

  1. I cant judge the effectiveness of the passenger side airbag, as I was driving solo.
  2. Just because my cars worked fine, that doesn't mean that everyone elses car is the same.
Will say though that the passenger side airbag is massive when it deploys. Id be scared to see what It would do to someone if it inadvertently went off.
