Check out this patch someone did on my oil pan. It's so fun finding things like this.

I changed my oil pan today because it was rusty and leaking at the back. There was this one spot that looked weird from the outside, but once I pulled the pan I could not believe what I saw.

I thought it was rusty and just had oil dripping from it. But when I got a light I noticed it was a different color.

I don't even know what to say. I still don't understand how or why.

Thats really confusing why anyone would screw a bolt into the oil pan.

And i'm guessing thats epoxy or something covering it up.

Previous owner probably couldn't get the drain plug off for some reason (or thought a bottom-positioned hole would give them a more thorough drain ) and drilled a hole. Then, they realized they had to plug the hole. Thus the screw. Then they realized the screw leaked like a sieve. Thus, the epoxy.

Nice!!

x2 on award.

It looks like a plastic screw in plug that you'd use in drywall or something

the oil pan or whole motor came out the junk yard prolly. Here at the local j/y they punch a hole in the oil pans, trans pans, and fuel tanks before setting the car on the yard

Thanks for the ideas as to why this was done. I assume the scrapyard has to drain the vehicles prior to parking them so they won't leak anything into the ground. I am 99.9% sure my motor is original but I could see someone grabbing a junkyard oilpan not realizing there was a hole and plugging it when they got home and cleaned it up.

The screw looks like it was done off the car because I cleaned around it and there is jb weld adhered to the inside as well. That wasn't even the problem the screw held up fine, it was leaking at the back of the pan. I checked today and it still looks brand new.

Also I posted this to a mechanic subforum on reddit and a few people said they had done it to their own cars.

But would they do a hole that small? I would assume that it would be bigger.
