The problem is when "sawing the lever" or manually shifting an auto, I find that when you shift, the tranny takes to d@mn long to go to the next gear. You almost need a 200 rpm buffer zone when you shift. This delay is even more pronounced at higher rpms. Athough, once the VB Mod is done, things will hopefully be different.

An older Mustang GT makes peak power at around 4700rpm yet has a redline of 6000rpm. You actually get the best performance in the Mustang if you shift at around 5500rpm. This is because the engine wheezes for breathe at higher RPM's and can't make any power.
The Subaru WRX makes peak power at 6000rpm but has a redline of 7000rpm. This is because the factory turbo boost controller opens up the wastegate and drops the boost pressure to avoid over-spinning the turbo (a little mod can fix that though ) So on this engine you end up getting the best performance if you shift at around 6500rpm on the 2-3, 3-4, and 4-5.
The 5th Gen Maxima makes peak power at 6400rpm and has a redline of 6500 rpm (I think) so you just shift that puppy at redline all the time since the engine is making full power all the way up to the top and doesn't fall off. That's why you automagic guys get screwed over with that crappy 6000rpm shift point. You have to manually shift it and time it just right so that it shifts at 6500rpm while also not hitting the rev limiter.

OK, if you "manually" shift your automagic, (1st gear to redline, 2nd to redline), what makes you think you will be accessing more horsepower?? Your car shifts where it does (under WOT) for a reason - it is the point at which most horsepower can be used most effectively. Redline does not indicate peak horsepower, and in fact, may actually allow the powerband to drop off a bit. Remember, power curves are just that - curves, not straight lines. You dont make more horsepower by using the 1st gear -> redline, and second gear -> redline selector, you just run your engine at a higher RPM. Just turn off your O/D button, the tranny will do the rest. Hope this helps!

1-2 @ 6600rpm (40 mph)
2-3 @ 6520rpm (64 mph)
3-4 @ 6380rpm (88 mph)
4-5 @ 6340rpm (116 mph)
5-6 @ 6330rpm (152 mph)
It gives a maximum speed of 149 mph though, so it looks like you'll get top speed in 5th gear at redline on a 2k2 6spd and 6th gear is just an econo gear (0.612:1).

ya it feels like there are up there not the 6100rpms like dave B says. but redline once you get going is not the best i think. esp 3-4 and 4-5 right around 6400 is where it feels good.

and i don't think anyone can shift faster and better than the computer..if you do..then mad props goes to you...
it's just that even if you just dropped the hammer and go WOT..the computer won't shift up until u hit the rev-limiter or near the redline..so..i don't know if ****ing manually with auto really helps..but then again, i don't have one so i can't say for sure..

I know you can have more fwhp than me with that motor. It's scary to imagine such a small car with so much hp. Still, it's an econobox.

Yeah its an econobox, but a total sleeper. It's like a Honda, but the badges say Nissan.

Power + sleeper does not equal rice.
