If you are thinking of JIC Coilovers I got something to show you...
If you are thinking of JIC Coilovers I got something to show you...
This all started in the parking lot of the local bagel place:

Timeline:
Bought the COs secondhand back in ~April 2009 (Receipt from JIC is May of 2010 so I must have bought them in June or July 2010) and installed them (Suspension Swap)
August of 2010 I find out that I'm gonna be a daddy. Due to the rears riding rough (Too much preload) I pulled the COs off and put them in the garage.
August of last year (2012) I put the COs back on after reading a post and finding out that the rears were improperly adjusted.
2 weeks ago I notice I have a little too much negative camber and the steering wheel is crooked after hitting an especially hard set of RR tracks. The next day I take the car in to have the alignment checked. They miss the ripped lower mount. A few days later I'm on my way to work and stop to get some breakfast. As I back out of the spot the wheel folds all the way in and I'm immobile and have to call a tow truck.
The failed lower CO mount:

I thought it was due to that one hard hit, apparently the tube was already failing. Here's the other side:

Given those cracks these were already on their way to failing catastrophically. So I guess I was really lucky.
Sad part is I have maybe 15,000 miles on these. They sat in my garage for most of the time I had them.

that's good it happened in the parking lot and not while doing 75 down the highway
too bad they failed, people say they ride as good as stock suspension, but are adjustable stiffness

This is the second JIC that I seen all JACKED UP!!! The first one when I was in MD visiting and a member had one on his 5th gen. It was a blown front strut on the JICs, now I see this garbage. They asking too much money for them dam things for this to be happening!!! Thats why I passed on them! Expensive trash!!
Damn, that's crazy Ken. Glad they failed though how they did.
OT, these are discontinued now, correct?
What suspension setup are you going with next?

JIC unfortunately has a history of this, check out what happened to this subbie:

35-40 under the 45 MPH limit. All it did was finalize the crack and start the failure. It also doesn't explain the crack on the other side that was 75% to the threaded collar.
Ken,
I wonder if JIC knew about this problem, because if you look at my JIC coilovers, that bracket is part of a reinforced sleeve that goes all the way around the tube, whereas your bracket is welded directly to the tube.

and now that your DD is boosted you feel like giving up that stillen equal y pipe? Hmmmm??? lol
My car looked just like that Saturday. My driver side coilover snapped backing out of my driveway. I bought a set of Megan Racing coilovers about 18 months ago. They ride kinda rough, lucky it was right in my own driveway and I had my old ones in the garage and was able to put in on or I would have been stuck like chuck. Guess thats what I get for trying to save a few $$$ and going with Megan. Glad it did not happen at freeway speeds as I commute 50 miles each way per day and had just gotten home from work.

I'm going to be extra careful when I put coilovers on my car some day. That is the last thing I want happening. It's a bunch of BS too because they are putting the lives of customers at risk, it's unacceptable. Did they ever test the damn things before they went to market?
Has nothing to do with installation.
They spot check some. If that one is fine, the batch is approved.
First time I've seen it. I've installed a lot of coils of all brands.
I still think JIC are decent but definitely feel they should cover it.

I meant more the choosing of the brand then the installation, I should have clarified. I work in a seatbelt factory as of last night and let me tell you, we check every single part, even non critical components that have nothing to do with safety. I would hope companies with products made to support the massive weight of a vehicle would do the same but apparently they don't (I'm sure some of them do). Ok so seat belts save lives so they have to be super strict about it yada yada yada. But a bad weld on a coilover (or bad coilovers in general) could ruin a life, thats no good.
