Manual Tranny Purring

Hello,

New to the forums. I have a black on black, manual, 2001 SE. 150k miles. No mods. I bought the car in 2007 and love it. Stumbled upon this forum and thought I would ask about my problem.

About a year ago the car started making a purring sound when it was driving in 1st and 2nd gear. The sound seems to be connected to the transmission as the purring sound intensifies as RPM increase. The sound does not exist when car is in neutral; only when driving in 1st and 2nd. There is no notable change in performance connected to this sound, but I assume something has gone awry in the tranny somewhere.

I had the clutch replaced about 10k miles ago, but I believe the sound existed before the clutch was replaced.

I can live with the noise, just kind of worried this could lead to a serious malfunction down the road.

Yes, the gear oil is leaking very slowly, but it was still almost completely full when I checked it. It is now making a much more violent, metal to metal sound. I'll have to take it to a tranny shop this week.

I had the same but I would describe it as a soft chatter.

It was quite costly.

Nice. It just went from a purring to a chatter over the weekend. Did you need a rebuild? My friend has a lift and is fairly knowledgeable about cars. I'm wondering if this is something that could be done in a weekend or if I should hand it over to the professionals.

My car is doing the same thing, it sounds like a hum or a whine. How much does it cost to fix this if it's the ISB?

I think it could possibly be a CV shaft. The sound intensifies when I make a turn in one direction now.

You need to tranny rebuilt or replaced. I've seen $850 for a used tranny or $900-1000 to rebuild the tranny. This is not including labor for tranny removal/install.
