"Money shifted" my max, what to check for?
Well guys, pulled a bit of a dumb **** move last night. While getting on the highway I managed to miss shift into 2nd instead of 4th which of course sent the revs a wee bit past redline.... I caught it fairly quick but by the time I looked down at the tach (after engaging the clutch) it was still at 7600rpm
Anyway the engine went back to idle and it drove home normally. It idles fine and there's no knocking or abnormal vibrations at idle or at part throttle. Is there anything I ought to check for to see if my VQ is toast?

Ya you'd know immediately if u did any damage lol. idk how u mistaked 2nd for 4th big difference their lol. and 7600rpm is not much above red line n its strong *** motor.
jus start checkin ur oil it is possible u messed piston rings up n may start burning oil.

I went from 1st to 2nd to 5th~
I owned a 4 speed at the time and didn't see that coming.
I just left it in 5th and finished the quarter mile at around 70mph.
He didn't let me have a second try.

As long as you dont hear of feel anything different, you should be ok. If there is damage it will be unseen damage to the clutch or flywheel, which of course you cant check. The engine is PROBABLY fine. They are strong engines. I wouldn't be to concerned about it. I did the shift from 5th to 4th when I was trying to hit 6th...

And it still seams to be acting normal, though Ive been taking it easy.

On a pushrod motor you'd have to check for a bent pushrod. Only thing you could have done to one of these is stretch the timing chain and smacked a valve or bent a piston rod... all very noticable. Or torched a crank bearing... or broken a valve spring. Pretty sure your fine if the things still running smooth... worst thing you did is hurt your pride

You do feel like a dumbass... Or at least I did... My money shift happened as I was overtaking a civic SI, I did a 3-2 instead of 3-4 and the nose dived, front tires screeched, engine screamed, driver of the civic looked at me with a WTF expression on his face... My pride got hurt that day...

i wouldnt worry if its running fine, ive done that ONCE before. years ago i was driving my moms old 3rd gen Prelude, i dont know how the hell i did it but i meant to go 3rd to 4th and went into 2nd. poor car had like 650,000km on it, nothing ever came of it. ran fine. a guy i know had this auto trans **** up on the highway and it went into 1st gear at like 140km/h. engine survived
ive seen this happen many times, even at work people come in saying they did the same thing. never has there been damaged caused, only 1 guy i work with said something happened once. guy in a Audi i think it was went from 5th to 2nd i believe, must have went to like 10k+ revs and blew the engine.
rev limiter doesnt do anything if you misshift like that, theres no fuel for the engine to cutoff to limit the RPM. youre going sky high

I did it in my max. It was my first time driving an auto in many years and I shifted it getting on the highway from 3 straight back into 2 instead of to the right for 4th. Looked down when it wouldn't move and saw I was at 7500rpms.

^^^ Ive shifted an auto from 2nd to 1st at 70 mph so it IS possible (not computer controlled though, different car). May or may not have expelled some spark plugs from their holes locking up the tires from engine decel is an interesting experience

Engine is still running fine but there's a momentary rattle now on cold starts, though my last Maxima did the same thing so thats more or less normal.
Going to change the oil in a couple hours, Ill post back on what I find (if anything).

Auto max shift pattern is like a maze.
In a manual, straight back would obviously be 4th. 4th in an auto maxima is to the right(see above). It was the first time driving my new car getting on the highway. I think my foot even came off the deadpedal and pressed for a ghost clutch.
Sorry, I didn't realize it was that confusing.

you are fine... there is a reason why the engine has rev limiter... ohh no wait your car is toasted... sell it to me for parts... I am just kidding... you didn't hurt anything... how fast were you going?

However, that fuel cut does nothing to stop a downshift over-rev. That's purely mechanical and there is nothing to stop it.
