Western General (Extended Warranty) Any thoughts?
Hi there,
Thank you for this forum. I wanted to check if any member has had a recent dealing with this insurance co, Western General. I recently bought an 03 Maxima GXE from John Hine Mazda here in San Diego with 130k miles. The car was in great shape externally and (hopefully) what lies beneath the hood. Carfax history was long of periodic maintenance such as alignment, rotation and balancing, oil, transmission and other fluid changes, detailing, etc. However the manager pressured me into buying a 2-Year 24,000-mile extended power train warranty with the vehicle at $1,400k, financed over 36 months. I did not think it is even possible for a car this age and mileage to have extended care available.
While I still have the chance to cancel it, I hope someone has had history with Western General and can shed a light to their practices. The Internet had bad reviews but most of them are long time ago, 3 years and back. If they are ok, then I might keep the plan.
Thank you for any thoughts.

I'll point you to Clark Howard on this one...any extended vehicle warranty that doesn't come from the manufacturer is crap. Cancel it and quit wasting your money.
Congrats on the new car BTW.

cancel it. Financing the warranty alone over 36 months (24 month warranty, 36 months paying for it!!!) at any interst rate 5% compounding or higher will mean that you will pay an extra 50 bucks a month, just for the "warranty". That's another 1500 bucks added to your loan that you don't need to pay.
did you bother to get the vehicle inspected? You said that "hopefully what lies beneath the hood" was in good condition...This is worrisome, tells me you did NOT get the car inspected before you were like "shut up and take my money"

Yes, we test drove and inspected the engine. The car is in very good shape and the shop it went for maintenance is right around the corner with very good reviews.
