'05 72k swap in my '02 186k 5.5 6MT (pics) - ENGINE IS IN!!! More to come...
Nothing much. Blew engine Thursday afternoon, bought a used '05 with 72k miles on it less than an hour away this afternoon and here's the progress so far...
...all done by me, myself and I. Will prob get an assistant when time comes to pull engine, but until then I'm going solo.
Old engine:
New (used) engine:
Drained all the fluids, removed intake, and most all of the electrical:
Fuel rail removed, the rest of electrical removed, and tranny removed:
Next, engine removal...

engine swaps are fairly straight forward on the 5.5 gens. Make sure you clean the mating surfaces very well between engine block and transmission bell housing. Also don't forget to clean the grounds real good.
Are you planning to do the timing chain guides on the 05 motor? I would highly recommend doing at the very least the secondary chain guides since they will most likely wear completely buy about 90k-100k.
good job taking this your self. saved yourself 600-800$.

Sorry guys, been in limbo last few days with work and kids and other things. Found a one owner '99 Q45 that I picked up Monday morning for my daily driver.
All I've done since this post was swap over the fuel rail and coolant feeds. Hope to get to the rest of it this weekend. Still need to swap over the valve covers, flywheel/clutch, lightened pulley, intake, and upper/lower oil pan. Then I can begin the process of getting everything back in the car.
Bought it back in '06 with 59k miles. I have a motto I've lived by ever since my first car back in the mid-80's "Drive it like you stole it".
Anyhow, I got one of the VQ oil burners and around 80-90k, I was putting 1qt of oil in every 1k-1.5k miles. Over time it got to where I was putting 1qt in every 500 miles (around 130k). The car hit a little over 186k miles and finally decided it didn't like my driving habits anymore or it didn't like Nissan's faulty rings any more. Done...
I wanted to check the VIN to see if it had already been done, but am having a hard time finding the website that has recall/tsb info. Or atleast I thought there was one. If not, it's in the plans before engine goes back in.
Was on my bucket list to swap an engine. Just didn't plan on doing it in my daily driver. I plan on selling as soon as I get it up and running. Too many other things I don't want to deal with anymore. Rear fender rust (again), suspension and bushings (again), radiator support rust, and the list goes on...

I bought this one locally for $700 w/72k miles. Was the best deal I could find. It's got some parts I had to swap from mine due to damage, but overall appears to be a decent shape. Came with a 90 day warranty. Hopefully I won't have to deal with that...

Good work man. I did a 3.5 swap from am 05 with about 90k miles on it and it ran me 800 out the door. They gave me a 6 month warranty thought. I picked 05 because I've heard they were not as likely to burn oil. Good luck. Should be pretty straight forward swapping into a 5.5 gen.

Well the coolant lines that go to the oil filter housing were completely fubar'd on the '05 used engine, then as I was inspecting the ones on my '02 engine one of them started to leak. Rusted through. The other one isnt any better. So, that will be on my parts order list along with all the gaskets and what not I need.

In my initial post, the picture of it is sitting in the rear, I took that picture from the driver side passenger door opening. There's plenty of room.

Everything is pulled off the '02 including the upper/lower oil pans. I ordered new gaskets, seals, O-rings and oil filter coolant lines. All the parts should be here this week or early next week. Taking some vacation time with my kids, so not sure when I'll be finishing the install, but should be close to buttoning everything back up first week of August.

How hard was it to pull the engine from the top, some people said it was a pain so I ended up dropped my engine a few months ago.
I also went through the hasle of gutting that cat and it was a pain in the ***.. I actually punctured a hole right through it when I was gutting it, ended up having to find a good welder.. That metal is one of the hardest to weld, I got lucky

I did it by myself using the engine lift and had absolutely no issues whatsoever. So my response would be that it was not hard at all.

Due to room in garage constraints, I actually benefited. I pulled the engine from the passenger side which now that I look at it, was very beneficial. I plan on bolting tranny/engine together and installing both at same time the same way. I feel that coming in from passenger side should make the placement of the tranny much better than going from the front and no major concerns about the A/C parts still in there ;-)

Got final shipment of all the gaskets, O-rings, oil cooling lines, etc. yesterday. Waiting on primary O2 sensors and will begin re-assemble a little bit here and there. Spending my "staycation" with my kids, so staying away from the car for the time...
...I did however get the '02 fuel rail, rear injector connectors and intake mounted to the '05. So, I'm getting there.

HAHAHA, funny guy! ^^^^^
But hey, nice work! I love it when people take down projects like this. I've done my own swap in an 88' 5.0 and helped on a few others. Like you said, very rewarding!! GOOD JOB!

Update: Got the '02 upper oil pan swapped and then proceeded to clean off the gasket on what I thought was the '05 lower oil pan. Got it all nice and purdy then realized I cleaned the '02 lower pan.
The '02 pan is rusted, so now I have to clean up the '05 pan as I had thought I was doing. I also decided to keep the '05 oil pan baffle plate and removed the '02 baffle plate.
[For reference: '02 baffle plate is bolted inside the upper oil pan. '05 baffle plate is bolted to lower portion of block]
'05 block and pan...
'05 block w/'02 oil pan...
And, I found two of these inside the '02 oil pan. Any ideas where they might have been? I assume this had something to do with when the engine went bye bye...
