2002 stock Bose CD in-dash changer

I was reading the owners manual for the Bose in-dash CD changer and it states that the use of CD-R and CD-WR disks could cause the system to fail. Is this true? Has anyone used CD-R or CD-WR disks and if so, have you had any problems or do they even work at all? Thanks!

i suspect they mean

overburned CDs. IE, a track outside the stroke of the laser. That would cause it to freak. I cant see why your writing software would write such a CD. HOWEVER, copy protected ones might use a trick like that. It would be interesting if a copy protected CD (which arent out in big numbers yet) fudged up your player

They work fine for me - I think the (huge, if I remember correctly) list in the manual of types of disc the in-dash changer won't play (including several nobody in their right mind would expect it to be able to play) is just Nissan covering their asses.

By putting the warning in, if somebody complains that their CD-R won't play, or puts in a CD-R with a paper label that proceeds to come off and gum up the entire machine, causing it to overheat and set your car on fire, Nissan can just point to the manual and say "Look, we told you not to do it, so it's not our problem".

I can't say I've tried CD-RW disks in it, so I don't know if they work, but CD-Rs play OK, although I don't think I'd risk putting a CD with a stick-on label in there.

CD-RW (probably) won't work

It has a different reflective (crap, crap, blah, blah) that allows the laser to 'burn' the pits in the CD. The different relfective (crap, crap, blah, blah) *usually* means it won't work for playing music in a regular CD player (even though it will work in a computer CD player).

I don't see how it could "harm" the CD, though... try coloring the edges of the CD with a green Sharpie pen. That might help (that's a joke, by the way - don't do it).

Here's my understanding of the (crap, crap, blah, blah) part:

stamped CDs and DVDs (mass produced discs, typically store-bought stuff) reflect all light quite well (make good mirrors too).

CD-R discs reflect the light used by a CD laser well, but not other frequencies. (DVD players need a 2nd laser to read these)

CD-RW discs reflect all frequencies poorly. To support these, the firmware in the reader need only amplify the signal.

That's why a CD-R disc is more likely to work in a CD player than a CD-RW disc is. And why a CD-RW disc is more likely to work in a DVD player than a CD-R disc is.

My Bose in-dash changer failed , and I had to have the dealer change the whole head unit. They blamed in on the CD-R disk, but still did it under warranty.

And did they tell you not to listen to rap music, put empty cups in the cup holder or put your left shoe on first too?
