P0340 Code

P0340 Code

Car stalled on freeway on my way home from work. Took me a few tries to start it back up and have it stay running. But when it finally did it was fine. Jumped back on the freeway and headed home. Got home and pulled the dreaded P0340 code for my cam sensor. Took it out just to look at it. Small coat of oil on it. Put it back in. Now its been just over a week and 250 miles later with no symptoms. Has anyone have this happen to them with the problem not returning or is this gonna eventually get worse until I change the sensor?

That's a tough question to answer. A piece of dirt/sludge/metal could have gotten in the way and by removing the sensor, you cleaned it. I believe the FSM has the ohm resistance value for the sensor, so you could measure that and see.

Otherwise, time will tell.

It will get worse. The sensor is a hall sensor so dirt will not affect the operation.It senses a change in magnetic field when metal passes by so it would have to be a big piece of metal stuck to it. When one of mine went it started stalling about once a week then all the sudden it would hardly stay running for 20 minutes.

Actually I didn't pull out the sensor right away. It was a few days later. There was nothing on it but a coat of oil which I cleaned off and put back in. Maybe I'll take it back out and check the voltage when I'm not feeling lazy.

Hi, maxspeed96

I have the same issue right now with my maxima 07, when i go to my house, my car turns off and i have the same code, do you know where is that sensor located? would be helpful to be, so i can try clean it, its why my Service Engine Soon is turn on, when you clean that sensor, your Service Engine Soon, disappears?

^^it's located right next to the rear valve cover on the side of it, it has a green plug P0340 is bank one so it's the rear

For what it's worth, my old 2001 I30 had this problem. I was on the highway as well, all of a sudden I felt no power, dead gas pedal, and then I just rolled to a stop on the shoulder, when I came to a full stop the car shut down on me. But it turned right back on in like 2-3 tries and ran fine ever since.

This problem only ever came up ONE TIME on that car, never to be seen again. Must've been something that got in the way just during that drive and then broke loose and was gone. Just wanted to throw it out there, that it's possible to have this problem only once and never see it again. However, I would think the way it happened to me is not the norm, and that if it happens once chances are you will see it again.

Same here. Just happened that one time. 800 miles later symtpms haven't came back.

Problem came back but no codes. It sometimes hesitates/surges on the freeway but doesnt die. Took several time to start today. But once it started it was like normal. Hmmm....
