Not certain on this gen, but on prior gens it has been the opening for the interior thermostat as part of the auto climate control.

That is the air intake opening for the cabin temperature sensor, which means the car is equipped with the auto climate control.

Yup. Temperature sensor. There's a sensor tube running to it if you take apart the dash face there.

he asked why i was cleaning, not me asking how. The whole car needs detailed, when we bought it my mom turned down the free detail. (wtf?)

If you get it detailed, I would be surprised if they did the temp sensor or even your vents.

i'll probably end up having to do it my self but, hard work never hurt any one so it shouldn't be too bad. EDIT: oh yeah i WTFing about my mom passing up the free detail.
