hi guys,,,2001 maxima se,,,muffler needs to be replaced,,wonder which manufacture would you guys recommend,,i was told to avoid the walker muffler,,any pointers would be helpful..not interested in loud noisy mufflers,,,

So you're interested in a quiet, OEM replacement then?

Alright, so since walker is out the window (they make a single outlet muffler), you now have Bosal/Ansa/Replacement that make OEM replacement mufflers. Bosal/Ansa are just fine, both are dual tip mufflers, one is slightly more expensive and one is also Italian (Ansa) and is used on Fiat's and whatnot. I don't know much about the Replacement brand. The Ansa comes with welded on chrome tips, but they look like crap and the Ansa pipes are not long enough so the muffler ends up sitting like 3-5" short of the bumper opening (ask me how I know this ) LOL

I had got the Ansa replacement initially, now I have a brand new exhaust system top to bottom, old one was rusted and crap anyway. So unless you want to modify the Ansa and throw on some longer tips, you probably should go with Bosal. Both are quiet, but the Ansa is noticeably freer flowing than Bosal and slightly louder but both offer stock sound levels. Both of those are aluminized steel though and will rust. There is also a company called Kool Vue, along with a few others, that make stainless steel/polished replacement mufflers, that are freer flowing and actually like $20-40 cheaper than the regular OEM replacements. I would go with one of these:



At the same time, the problem with these ^^^ is that it has a 2.5" inlet/3.5" outlet, and is a performance muffler, it's freer flowing and will have a mild sound level but definitely way louder than stock. It's not loud at all during regular cruising, but will be when you hit the throttle pretty good. And you have to make it fit because the stock inlet diameter of the piping is 2.25". This is not a problem though, any decent exhaust shop can make it work for you and fabricate a 2.25-2.5" connection. It all comes down to whether or not you can bear the extra noise, if not then your only option will be the direct OEM replacement mufflers.

 

Mufflers aren't noisy until you get headers and a test pipe, basically until you mod the furthest item from them in the exhaust stream.

I'd stick with OEM 5th gen.

 

Walker does make a dual outlet OEM replacement (QuietFlow3 #54295). They are probably as good as Bosal, which is ok - not great, but they have a lifetime warranty. If you get a good pair of SS tips welded on and you'll probably be pretty happy.
