Transmission Question

Probably going to get flamed and what not but it's worth a shot, So I'm about to start college in January. With that being said, my current 5th gen is having transmission problems, it's an auto btw, It sometimes doesn't grab second gear so it'll rev all the way up, and sometimes it can't choose what gear to stay in, the shifts are pretty hard, (which I don't mind), and it'll sometimes drop down a gear and the rpm will jump all the way up. That being said, how much do you guys think it will cost to have this repaired, or should I get myself another 5th gen, and say bye bye to this one. I'm going to need a reliable car to get me to school and back, 30 mile drive. Please don't sit there and call me a dumb a** for asking this because I know a lot of you guys love to.

Jesus, I do a 30 mile drive one way to work every day. In college it was a 330 mi trip. In any ase, what does the budget allow? I'd say toss a used low mileage tranny in there and call it good.

My 95 has almost the same symptoms, no 2nd or 4th/OD, 1-3 slips very badly. In any case, a low mileage used tranny should get you in the 2500 installed range. About the same as a used 00-01 Maxima.

That's what it was in fear of hearing. I could drop 2000$ to get another maxima with less miles and a better working transmission for the price of rebuilding/replacing my current one huh?

Keep the term rebuild out of your head. That's the most expensive option in my opinion.

I would shop around for shops near you for quotes. I was giving a pretty high estimate.

Also, my 95 has had those symptoms since 2005, still runs to this day, so I wouldn't worry about it too too much.

If you are tight on funds just drive it.

Once car goes bye bye, then upgrade to a new car

My old I30 had a slipping tranny, drove it for almost 100k miles after it started happening before it finally took a dump. Depends how bad it is, but it might last quite a while.

You can easily keep driving it + put together some coin in the meantime for a nice new whip when that tranny does go out.

But if it were me, 6MT swap all the way.

My i35 was having similar problems, it got a little smoother when i added marine tc-w3 oil to the gas tank. Whether or not it actually smoothed out the shifts, its an excellent additive for your fuel. Do the research before you add anything, though.

Heres a link.

$2200 For a rebuild in Miami for me. This was at AAMCO transmission. But if I were you I would just baby it. Just drive it easy you can get away with that for a few years if ur lucky.
