Grinding noise at shift points

Hello everyone-

I have a 2000 Maxima that is making a grinding noise right at the shift points. From 1st to 2nd it makes the sound but from 2nd to 3rd it continues to make the sound until 4th.

Under normal acceleration it makes it at 2200 or so rpm and if i put my foot in it a little it makes it closer to 4000-4500 rpms.

Not sure if it's a tranny issue. The sound seems like it is coming from the front passenger side which would be the wrong side for a tranny noise, right?

Let me know if this problem rings a bell with anyone. Car has 182K on it and I want to keep it for a school car for my boys but if it's going to be costly I might think twice about that.

Thank you

i would think more like something loose, like a heat shield.

I thought that might be it too. I put the car on a lift and found the pipe coming out of the converter was loose because the clamp was broken. I welded it back together but that did not cure the problem.

I would think if it was something loose then it would do it a the same rpm, not at the shiftpoint??

It vibrates pretty good when it does it. The car also vibrates really bad at a stop when it's in gear with my foot on the brake. My mechanic checked the motor mounts when it was up and said they looked fine. Could be unrelated though to the vibration when shifting.
