4AT to 5AT
4AT to 5AT
Hey guys! I have several questions today.
To begin with the guys at firestone blew up my trans on their joy ride after my alignment. I'm still waiting on the inspectors disision but if they reject the claim I'm going to make a law suit. Now for the questions!!
I researched a bit buy couldn't find what I was looking for therefore here I am!
Has anyone put the 6th gen (5at) into a 5.5 gen? I'm guessing it's just a bolt-on procedure and a 6th gen transmission module control (TCM). Any inputs?
Also this trans blew 20 miles within my maxxtuning stage II valve body. There's a whole in the transmission I can post up if anyone would like to see it!
Also would I be better off just rebuilding the 4AT with the laggy long gears with the Level Ten bullet proof kit or should I indeed the the 6th gen transmission with the level ten valve body?!?! Thanks guys!

Do a tranny swap like poster above did!
You sure the person who installed the transmission mod didn't screw up?
The Maxima I drive has a TransGO HD2 kit with about 15,000 km ~9,300 miles and no issues so far and it's been abused quiet a bit

just gonna say it, but i doubt the inspector will say its their fault. to blow up a transmission in that time period, you would have to neutral bomb and bag the absolute crap out of it. i would guess something else caused it thats not their fault. unless some employee was really pissed and did bomb the trans
You wont get them to admit fault, my uncle had a head gasket done at Midas and they "forgot" to replace with new gasket and the engine blew. Still decided it was our fault not midas. These companies are much bigger then you and I and have more money and power then you can ever hope to fight. Especially since you had less then 20 miles on a opened up trans with that kit installed. Im saying something happened while you were inside I remember your post asking what some parts were. Just my .02
LOL
Is y2kevse still around? I'd pay him off to ban georgey... because of him we had to shut down the local club forum and move to a new domain. This kid needs to be removed from the internet/be barred from communicating with humankind.
(pardon the thread hijack)
Regarding the tranny, I'd suggest that you first concentrate on the where : find a shop that is reputable based on other members' experiences (if not their knowledge around nissans/maximas, then word of mouth of friends or other car club members that live in your area). I don't know if you have anyone local who can recommend a tranny shop, but if you're rebuilding or need a core (sounds like the trans housing is in trouble), get the best to work on your car and source the parts. Referrals are the best way to go.
Usually brand name = punk kids = careless management = parent company won't care what happens/will blame you for putting in anything aftermarket = expect the worst from anywhere except where you are sent on a recommendation or referral.
Throwing my 2 cents in on a tranny rebuild, because I had mine done at approx 120k if memory serves (S/C installed at 68k) - in kms - I would suggest avoiding Level 10 as the kit is somewhat overpriced and the customer support is pretty clueless - unless it's sourced by the shop doing the work and they are good with the order process and can do the install in a competant fashion. Key element is finding someone who can build up the tranny for you properly - the local shop that did my install didn't use L10 parts, but did source quality parts (clutch plates, bands, etc) and did a good job paying attention to detail and the fact that whatever they put in would need to handle a good amount of abuse - it was still running strong at over 200k when I parted with the car. If you find someone who puts some heart and mind into what they do when they work on your car, it will pay off. Maybe without any added cost, if you're lucky.
I don't know where you are located, but you could try to work with Maxximum Tuning (I met the owner back ~02 when he did my VB - great guy!! Though I'm turning into an old fart now and forgot his name
) - source a built transmission through him and have it freighted over for direct install/replacement? Depending on how it's done, you might be able to get lucky and have it shipped over for a cost <$100.
Good luck!

A wise man told me to tell you:
Please tell that guy you CAN NOT put a 6th gen 5at into a 5th gen
1.6th gen trans runs off of canbus
2. You will have to change upper and lower oilpans and oil pump and pickup tube
3.6th gen trans uses vss like 4th gen where as 5th gen uses wheel sensor
4. Modding a canbus based system meand changing all your harnesses, sensors and ecu,bcm and tcm over
Oh yeah throw in there you will need to change your axles also and maybe hubs cause different spline.

Okay so Firestone ended up paying up. Also I have a maxximum tuning stage 2 vb that i bought from a member that was on sale not to long ago. I contacted Level ten for help because there's no way of getting in contact with maxximum tuning.
