What you probably have is a defective shift solenoid pack in side the transmission. There is a service bulletin on this. The bulletin number is NTB00-039D for the Maxima. The bulletin number for the Infiniti is different. The solenoid pack from a Nissan dealer is a $400 part, $310 from on-line places. There are after market solenoid packs that run around $130.

If you take it to a dealer, it will probably run around $800 or higher with labor and other miscellaneous parts.

Here is a link to the Maxima service bulletin:

This is an older version of the service bulletin and the part number for the solenoids has changed. The current number is 31940-85X0B.

Found the service bulletin number for the Infiniti. It is ITB00-029B, dated Sept 25, 2001

That's exactly what my 2000 I30 does! It gets better when the transmission is thoroughly warmed up, but it's still apparent. I've had mine for two and a half years and things haven't gotten much better or worse, by that I mean that it isn't like the transmission is about to fall apart. I'd like to get that bulletin done, but $800 is steep for a 13 year old car. I rarely, if ever, have to go WOT from a stop, but I found that letting off the gas and letting it shift, then getting back on the power after the RPMs drop makes things much smoother.
