wont turn over after sitting for a few minutes

2003 Maxima starts and runs fine when cold. If I stop for a few minutes and try to restart it will not turn over. If I let it sit for a 1/2 hour it will start and run fine. When it wont turn over I hear a click by the ignition switch when I turn the key. Not sure, but seems extreme cold may have something to do with it.

Original poster here. Please read my post again. I do not have the same problem as the other poster. Not a starter or battery problem. Only have problem when car is warmed up. Starts and runs fine when cold.
Thanks

When it is warmed and won't turn over have you tried moving the steering wheel slightly while trying to restart? Have you tried shifting into Neutral to try and restart?

I have a similar problem on a 02 but I think mine is remote start related. When I try to crank at random times I only hear a click from the engine area not the switch.I have had the starter battery and ignition checked. They all pass

Yes I wiggled the steering wheel and played with the shifter and tried to start it in neutral. No go.

could be the starter relay. there is a similar thread started that gives instructions on how to remove and jumper to see if that eliminates the problem.

Cant find the post on the starter solinoid. Wouldn't the solinoid be bad all the time, not only when warm?

Check the ECTS. many "warm start problems" are solved with a new one.

If you want to try putting in a jumper wire in place of a relay, it's not that hard. But what would be easier than the jumper would be to swap the starter relay with the air conditioner relay. The starter relay is in the box in front of the battery, row closest to the battery, 2nd from the left. The air conditioner relay is in the box by the power steering oil reservoir, row closest to the fender, 1st one from the front of the car. On my car (a 2000) the cover over the starter relay says INHIBIT, and AIR CON for the air conditioner relay, but your car might have different labels.

If you still have the problem, obviously the relay is not it. It still could be a starter problem, either brushes or solenoid. It could also be the park/neutral switch as it allows the relay to energize. I hope you don't have a remote starter system, they do screw up and are difficult to troubleshoot.

The way I read this thread, the engine doesn't crank over. If that is the case, I have to disagree with Amerikaner83 in regards to the ECTS. It will not prevent the engine from cranking over.

When the car will not start, will the car try to crank at all and just not catch or does it not even crank over?

Will not turn over at all. Just a click that sounds like it is coming from around the ignition switch.

good point. I missed that. ECTS doesn't seem to be your problem.

When I get a chance I will swap out the relays, sounds like a cheap and easy starting point. This has been an awesome, trouble free car not used to any problems.
Thanks for all of the advice.
