03 Maxima need opinions to make exhaust quieter
Hi everyone, I'm new on here and I am looking for some honest opinions in regards to my exhaust setup. I have an 03 Maxima, 6 speed manual. Besides the exhaust, the only mod I have is an Injen cold air intake. I just had my exhaust done today. It consists of a Warpspeed y-pipe, main cat delete, 2.5" piping straight from y-pipe to a dual tip universal muffler. When the shop called me to say it was all set, they said that the car was obnoxiously loud. I thought they were exaggerating, but they were right. Now my concern is that idk if I should've kept the main cat on to help muffle the noise or if I should install a resonator or have both. When it comes to resonators, I am confused on what to get. Some people say a longer one is better and others say a shorter one is better. I wanted my exhaust to be noticeable, but not THIS much. Plus the "in-cabin" noise is a bit much too. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I noticed the the flex pipe section of the Warpspeed y-pipe is awfully low, it literally looks like its 5-6 inches from the ground. The shop said they couldnt raise the pipe up any higher. Anyone encounter this issue and should I have them modify the y-pipe or leave it alone? Seems like my idea of lowering my car an inch or 2 might be out of the question now due to risk of bottoming out the flex pipe.
Thanks, Matt

If you get a resonator installed it will help with the droning sound (IE the constant WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and revibratory noise) If you want to make it quieter start with the muffler. Did you keep you stock exhaust??? If you did, the only way to get it quieter past the muffler is put back in the stock cat/Y pipe and maybe go with your new muffler on that. I really don't know what is to loud for you personally and what you are looking for.

The stock muffler I had was on its way out so it's not worth re-installing. The way its set up now, you can hear me from like 3 blocks away, if not further. Too loud for me is when I'm cruising at only 2,000 RPM, it sounds like I'm running open headers (exaggerating a bit, but just an idea). I would prefer it to be a nice, deep tone at idle and only when I'm pushing over 4,000+ RPM to get noticeably louder. Yeah it's got a crazy drone to it, so the resonator may be my best option right now. Any suggestions on what size resonator I should go with?

I work at a exhaust shop. Be careful with that y-pipe hanging low. If you were hit that on something hard enough you could break a manifold.. And that gets expensive. As far as the resonator goes... A resonator is basically a glasspack. So as a general rule. The longer the resonators the quieter it is. A resonator will definitely tone it down and help with the drone noise you are getting in the car.

That y-pipe is what really scares me, I need to figure out if it can be modified to raise up a couple of inches. Thanks a lot for all the help everyone I appreciate it. I'll update my situation as I go along.
