The coils on the 00-01 were essentially recalled.. Unless you have A Grey Dot on top of all your coils they are probably junk and need to be replaced. Ive been running the old ****ty coils for a long time now, ive just been waiting to come across a set of grey dots at the bone yard.

I'd say you might have a bad wiring harness on yours, the fact that the wire has to be in a certain position leads me to believe that one of the wires is broken or has become seperated

Your description for the FSM in your link is wrong. The FSM in the link is for the 1998 Maxima. It is only accurate for the 1998.

Every year of the 4th gen Maxima has a different electrical system. The 95 and 96 are close (but not identical) to each other. The 97 and 98 are close (but not identical) to each other. If you followed the 98 FSM for an electrical problem on a 95 or 96, you could cause some serious damage. If you were working on a 97, the differences are much less.

Essentially the EC and EL chapters are the biggest dangers for using the wrong year FSM. The mechanical stuff is pretty much the same.

If you want to provide a link to the FSM, I would like to suggest either of these two:
