headlight issue

hey guys, I just replaced the ballasts on my maxima and i put in some new bulbs. they are cheapy 20 dollar HID 8k's or something. But, when I turn on the headlights they just blink. They won't keep a constant beam. They just blink and then turn off and that's it.

On a side note when I went to Autozone and asked the how much an HID would be there they were like "$117".

I wanted to know the best/cheapest place to buy HIDS. One's that are still of good quality though... jeeeeeez.

Does it matter if they are D2S, D2R, or D2C?

get the 4300K... anything over that and you decrease you visibility and get a set of bulbs and ballasts that actually work. After all those are headlights we are talking about...

Best and cheap do not go hand in hand. Flickering is a sign of a bad ballast or bad connection, its not your bulbs. $117 seems reasonable and quite cheap for an HID kit.

It wont hurt to spend a bit extra to have better quality, some phillips HID's are $400+.

Cheap bulbs can be finicky with OEM ballasts. Here's what I recommend:
http://www.theretrofitsource.com/com...d2r-bulbs.html

EDIT: Realized this was the 5th gen forum not 6th gen. Linked proper bulbs.

Ive had this problem with my 96 maxima before, where the light just blinks and doesnt stay on. This is a ballast issue not bulbs.

Still it is recommended to go with the little more expensive ones as the cheap ones dont last as long

Do you have the ballast mounted to something or is it tucked in or even flopping around? To me this sounds entirely related to your HID kit, and not a factory harness issue.

no the HID BALLASTS I replaced are: 1 philips hella HID ballast, and then 1 OEM.

Why did I only do one side with a a philips you ask? Long story short the car was wrecked before I bought it on the driver side and they just replaced the 1 HID. Haven't really felt the need to put it back to stock because I don't want to mess with rewiring it.

But the really hope the ballasts are fine man.

But yea. they just blink for a split second when you first turn the lights on. I have just been driving around with my highbeams on like a cool ***. Haven't even got flashed once.

But yea man. If i order some more HID bulbs and this doesn't work. Im gonna be suuuuuuuuuuuper pissed.

I still got OEM ballast and use em with eBay bulbs. $12 for bulbs and $8 for shipping. I change different colors every other month cause I get bored. So far every set I got was good.

Its HID's in HID housings. My maxima is an 02. K thanks. But, it did start out doing this with the HID's when it was cold. Thats why I thought it was the ballasts. I replaced them. Now it just keeps doing it no matter what the temperature is.

You turn it on. It just blinks the blue lights at you. So I know its hooked up right.

I think I might go into Autozone and buy a bulb from there. Then, if I test it out with that I can return it. Because they wanted like 117 just for an HID bulb the last time I went in there.

I bought some 6k's for like 60 dollars from some website in like 2008. Then I recently bought some 6k HID's for like 20 bucks on Amazon.com. But, I think they are faulty or something. But I'm not sure if I wanna buy some 50 dollar bulbs If it is the wiring or Ballasts.

But, I just replaced the Ballasts..... I just dunno man.

hhmmm i'm jacking your thread but its not going anywhere anyways

You want to elaborate a bit more on these HID housings in the 02 model? I was going to pull my headlights apart and retro projectors in but if i can find a factory alternative and save me some time i'd go that way.

Thanks!

hate to say, there no such thing as cheap hid unless you find them on ebay, probably poorly manufactured or, used. Sylvanna HID bulbs runs about 100 bucks. You probably have poor connection or the wrong bulb size, since they do matter, since the socket are not interchangeable, with the D1S, D1R etc....look alike but the socket are entirely different

The bulb base that goes into the connector is the same for D2R, D2S and D2C so that's not his issue.

Isnt it the coating on the top of the bulb to direct the light the difference?because all the bases are the same

That and the notches where the bulbs sit on the reflector. Those are the only differences.
