Nissan Maxima 2000 - Car shifter stuck in parking position
My car recently started showing an issue where the car shifter is stuck in parking. Temporarily, I used the shift lock release and was able to unlock it. Also, I think the switch lock control switch seems to be OK, as I hear the click noise when I press the brake with key in ACC position.
Appreciate if anyone could point to what is wrong here.

The transmission shift lock is not supposed to work in the ACC position. I don't know what you are hearing, but it shouldn't be the shift lock mechanism.
Is the manual release still working?
The way the system works involves a switch a relay and a 2nd switch. When you step on the brake pedal, the brake light switch sends power to a relay to energize it. But it will not energize unless the transmission is in the park position. There is a switch in the transmission for this. When the 2 switches are closed, the relay will energize and supply power to the shift lock solenoid so you can move the lever.
There are 2 fuses involved in this chain of events. The fuses also power other things in the car, so check and see if your tail lights and backup lights work. If they do, the fuses are OK.

if you have the key in ACC and depress the brake pedal, on most vehicles you should be able to shift out of park. key off, often not although some models you still can
do these have the gated shifters with no button on the shift **** or are they straight shifters with a button? if its got a button, check and make sure the spring inside is intact. if its not it can cause those problems

The FSM for the 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 models specifically says the ignition switch must be in the ON or START position for the shift lock mechanism.
The part about the shift lever button is is good point. There could be a mechanical problem. Such as the key interlock cable that runs between the ignition switch and the shift lever.
Click the link below for the AT section od the 2000 service manual:

Start on page 270. The key interlock cable is on page 276.
