Wheel Offset for 00-02 Max!
Wheel Offset for 00-02 Max!
Listen up...I KNOW the STOCK wheel offset for my 2001...But...what's the BEST OFFSET to get in aftermarket wheels to bring out those babies to the fenders? Just as wheelwell spacing is important to everyone (hence why we purchase lowering springs - to decrease the gap while increasing handling), I find the stock wheel offset to be too far inboard of the fenders. Plus, while I'm at it, why are the rear wheels even MORE inboard than the fronts? Do people know what I'm talking about?
This has been BUGGING me ever since I started looking for rims!
Help, please!!!

Re: Re: Wheel Offset for 00-02 Max!
The offset for my stock Y2K SE 17" wheels is 45mm. This is stated in the owners manual and molded into the back of the wheel. I don't know what the offset for the 15" and 16" wheels are.
I replaces the OEM wheels with 40mm offset Tantrums. The Tantrums sit slightly outboard towards the fender lips. They look great!

Personally I have (on an '02) an 8" wide wheel with 40mm offset and 245 tire. When I take a straight edge and place it along the outside of the tire up into the rear wheelwell what I see is around 6mm clearance between the edge of the straight edge and the inside edge of the fender. If I were to get that inside edge of the fender 'rolled' there would be a little more room, but there doesn't seem to be any need for that. A 7.5" wheel with the same offset and tire as I have would obviously end up with an additional ~3mm of clearance, whereas an 8.5" wheel with the same tire and offset is gunna be pretty damn close with only ~3mm of extra space.

Offset is a universal number independant of wheel width, so if you were to stuff 245 tires on a 8" or 9" rim with 40mm offset on both, they'd fit (theoretically) identically. Here's a simple definition of offset: http://www.whalentire.com/faqs.cfm#offset

Actually no, that's wrong. What you're thinking of is "backspacing", which IS dependant on wheel width, which is why it sucks

I never said that the offset changed with wheel width, what I was trying to say is, where the outside edge of the tire ends up is dependent not only on offset but ALSO on wheel width. Since the question being asked in the thread was one where a guy wanted to know how to go about filling in that space between the inside edge of the fender lip and the outside of the tire, in my estimation both offset AND width need to be considered.
You said, "...stuff 245 tires on a 8" or 9" rim with 40mm offset on both, they'd fit (theoretically) identically...". Based on this you could also say, stuff 245 tires on a 8" or 14" rim with 40mm offset and both will fit identically??? Maybe you could explain how this would work because I still don't understand it.

Where is the extra wideth going to go? Look at the Whalentire.com diagram and leave the offset exactly as shown, now make the rim wider, how on earth could the outside edge of the rim/tire not end up closer to the inside edge of the fender lip?

I have "tunnel vision" and am always looking from the perspective of simply trying to squeeze X size tire under the fender, which is mainly an offset issue, and not a wheel width issue. You are CORRECT sir!(Also, I agree with your other reply - he should go with the lowest offset possible for any given width.)
Favor/Question -
Stock 2002 Maxima, SE.
Tires: P225/50R17 93V
I want to replace my stock wheels/tires with a new/used takeoff set from a 2008 Altima with these specs:
P215/55R17 93V
Rim Width: 7.5 inches Bolt Pattern (millimeters): 5 x 4.50 or 5 x 114.3
Rim Dia: 17 inches Offset: 45
Would these fit my Maxima? Any issues, concerns?
One tire size calculator site says it is 3.5% larger and does not recommend as brakes may fail.
Thanks in advance I am a rookie at this.
