Back with my 3rd Maxima--yet a question

Hey Everyone!

Im Back with a new Purchase...had a 5sp 01/03 se TE.
Now i just bought a 02 se from long time friends. More details on the car if desired

Heres the puzzling question..long ago when i made my ID..A33_ridah it was when i had my 03.
As many of us know (and i thought i knew) A31 is supposed to be designated for 00-01 with the 3L whilst A33 is designated for 02-03 with the 3.5L.

Well...heres the twist. Iv known the people i got my 02 from since they bought her new...
My 02 as original as it is..with the facelift/interior difference/3.5L has a....
A31 VIN #

WTF right? Were early production 02 models still designated a31???!! someone must be able to clear my mind of this here.

No accidents; all panels match that vin...firewall is stamped vq35. motors a 3.5L and the rest...
mystery? im emotionally disturbed cuz of this

I wouldn't worry about this too much.

I have not looked into this much but I think that characters 4-6 of the VIN do not really correspond to the chassis code of the vehicle. I have an 03 6spd SE TE and characters 4-6 are A31... and my car certainly does not have a A31 chassis (I believe A31 was used by some much older Cefiro).

A33 chassis was on 00-03 models, so having 02, I don't think you have to change your username.

^^its goes against what i thought i knew to be true all these years :/ my id names sticking tho hehe

If your 03 SE manual TE is a31 vin then i actually feel better. Btw you have the exact car i searched all over for...if you ever sell it you have a sure shot buyer here

Americaner is right.

4th gens were A32. If you're curious more about codes, here is a good list for Nissan:
