engine swap cost opinion
my 5.5 burns so much i top it off every 2 days. never knew this 5.5 would be a 2 stroke and never need an oil change
it puffs sometimes on deccel sometimes accel and even idle occasionally
so i've been looking at replacement engines and they're quite expensive up here in canada.
cost of an fwd vq35 is 900-1500 depending on the mileage. anywhere i get one from the warranty averages 60-90 days, one junkyard had 6 months but i had to purchase the warranty.
knowing that the vq35's have like a 20% chance of burning some oil i looked at a third option from a wrecker that does swaps. they can sell you an engine and as long as they do the replacement they include a 3 year warranty... so for the lowest mileage engine (60k km out of i35) with all work taxes-in its pretty much $3000... worth it?
also saving for a clutch that i really need and would make sense to do with the swap as well as some new suspension and brakes. so much **** i need to get done before fun

3k for an engine that is NUTS.... I paid $300 for my 05 engine but thats me....... that's in my 02 maxima now but you can find alot of VQ out there here's a link of engines that can fit in our cars.... to me the best engines are the 07-08 maxima ones they do not suffer the timing chain rattle or oil issues

when i get a second car (jus DD within a month) i will borrow my mech's compression tester and see. wouldnt it be safe to say that its on its way out the way the oil burns so fast and under pretty much any circumstance?

its 3k for engine with all labour to take mine out and new in with taxes (13%) WITH a 3 year warranty. the 07-08 altima engine does fit and its not that much more expensive. however they don't want to swap that into my car since they don't really know what to change. i read the swap thread but when i told them over the phone they weren't down to do that lol only 02-06. i also need the car to have all emissions etc.
if i go my own route choosing a cheaper engine and sending it to a shop to get it swapped i save like $600 but neither the mechanic nor the junkyard can offer me a guarantee that the engine or installation was good. does the 3 year warranty sound appealing to any of you if you had to pay a bit more?
I would not care for the warranty. Most junkyards offer 60-90 days warranty with the engines they sell and by then you will know whether the engine works or not. I have 07 Quest engine in my 02 SE 6 speed and I did the work myself. It was pretty easy swap to do.
I would look at other options. Just because you live in an area where motors cost more doesnt mean you cant find one somewhere else for less and then have it shipped.
I paid $750 for my engine off car-part.com shipped to a hub near (ish) me. It was a very low mileage motor. It wasnt around my location but it was a great deal and I decided to pay to have it shipped. Sure I could have bought one in my area for $400-$600 and saved some money but I like the almost new motor enough to pay extra for shipping.
Maybe you could do something similar and have it shipped to a shipping hub (by freight) within reasonable driving distance and do the swap yourself.
