another y-pipe question

Is it legal to have a y-pipe installed in your car? Will you pass inspection? Does installing a y-pipe lower the life of your car's engine?

It removes one of the pre-cats, which is only an emissions "issue" when the car is cold. If you warm it up well before an emissions test, you should have no problems passing, unless the inspection involves looking under the car and they see the label "Not for street use"...

If the y-pipe gives more power, then the extra strain on the engine should reflect in a decreased life expectancy. How much is hard to say. In addition, the urge to push your car harder increases in proportion to the extra power, also leading to a decreased engine life. However, if you drink, smoke or eat junk food regularly you're probably decreasing your own life expectancy more than a y-pipe is decreasing your maxima's so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Party high 'cos pigs can't fly.

A y doesn't make hp, it free's up hp by reducing the restrictions of the stock exhaust piping. I say it would be better for your car than the stock exhaust. It helps the car breath easier, but like you said, with a y you are more likley to beat on your car which would decrease the life expectancy. Don't worry just do your maintenance and you will be fine.
