Read codes without scan tool

The service manuals for the 2000 and 2000.5 Maxima differ in regard to how to read DTCs without a scan tool by using the flashes on the check engine light. Can the jumper trick between CHK and IGN on the diagnostic connector to enter mode II for the 2000 work the same on a 2000.5?

I have no idea. In the past, I also tried to read the flashes but I have found it too cumbersome. I bought a "pocket" ODBC scanner from Amazon.com for about $30 ($29.99 I believe) - the best investment I have ever made.

If u have a smart phone get one of those wireless scan units for 20-25 dollars that links to a phone app and gives all sorts of info and graphs I believe as well. I don't have a smart phone but I guess the app is great from what I've read about it. IIRC the name is torque.
