I have an 02 and I frequently run to Houma La from Houston, and if I set mine pretty high, it kicks cruise off and my light flashes also. Same thing, shut the car off, get gas....good to go again. I dunno? Funny you brought that up.

You are exceeding the design limits.

The cruise control has a specific speed range that it works in. On the low end, it is 25 mph. On the high end it is 89 mph.

From the 2002 Infiniti I35 service manual:

Automatic Speed Control Device (ASCD) allows a driver to keep vehicle at predetermined constant speed without depressing accelerator pedal. Driver can set vehicle speed in advance between approximately 40 km/h (25 MPH) and 144 km/h (89 MPH).
