Tranny cooler?
Tranny cooler?
Has anyone installed a tranny fluid cooler? The tranny seems under-specced. It's basically the same as the 95 tranny that only had to take around 175HP! My car will NOT take being driven in the mountains. The tranny gets red hot. Brand new synthetic fluid. I need a bloody COOLER.
PLUS - do not run the fluid through the in-radiator tank heat exchanger at all. I had 2 Q45's previously and used that B&M cooler on both. I bypassed the radiator on both. What's more, I moved the transmission from the 1992 to the 1995 and it was still perfect after 360,000 kms (fluid exchanges every 2 years). Heat is the enemy.
On the Q, the transmission wouldn't shift into 4th gear until the fluid was warm (Nissan designed it that way to prevent damaging a cold transmission). Bypassing the rad meant an extra 2-3 minutes of driving before getting 4th.
Cheers,
Glenn
Thanks for the info. I'm beginning to wonder if anything else is wrong. I recently had the valve body changed. Could it be that the TC isn't locking? I recall on my Gen IV Max that it was possible to disable the TC lock-up. Is there a way to tell?
Put it this way: I checked the dipstick and got a second degree burn on my hand.
I had to stop because the tranny began changing "at random" and then got stuck in second gear. I realised that when I found myself doing 4,500 rpm at about 45 mph. It took an hour to cool down. OK, so I was pushing it uphill - in a determined way, but not like a maniac!

The ambient temp was about 27C, nothing like what we see in summer. I was driving into the Sierra Madre, climbed about 3000 ft in about 30 minutes. Slow for the tight curves, then give it the gun until the next hairpin. I got to a village after about 30 minutes and the transmission went as described above. I'm taking it into a tranny specialist tomorrow to have it scanned for codes (the car is driving fine since the problem) and I will probably ask them to fit an aftermarket fluid cooler if they don't find any faults.
