2001 special edition problems

I hope im posting this in the right section but problem is i got the car stated above and its manual, around 139k miles i started hearing this noise as i would drive, it was only 1st gear that i could hear it in but then it gradually got to 2nd and 3rd car does not act wierd or anything but its their and i want to know what your opinion on it might be i baught it when it had 128k on it from a family member, they did normal maintnance and everything. So do I... so here is how see things on my end, turn the car on sounds normal with a bit of a wine idles with this sound like metal is spinning quick and rubbing, i push in the clutch no noise, realese the clutch its back, put it in first start to drive hear the noise while driving gets louder with more rpm let go the throttle and it wines down with the rpm dont really have trouble shifting gears go in fine, i thought it was the clutch but my cousin said he had a new one put in about 3 months before it was sold to me, the guy who installed it is a old family friend who likes to work on cars, he says its the tranny but i dont know so im looking on here to see if anyone has had a similiar experience, thanks if you have more question that might help you help me ask away thanks

It's either the throwout bearing or input shaft bearing.
Are you leaking fluid out of your drivers side axle seal?
Is there play in the DS axle?

You have to drop the transmission to get the throwout bearing replaced.
About the same effort as changing out the clutch.

Make sure you use GL-4 only for the transmission.
