When trying to find my misfire problem, I discovered this hose (outlined in red) is basically disintegrated. What is it? It looks like it might be the crankshaft vent/breather hose?

Please ignore my gasket. It's getting replaced today....

That hose will get stiff, but I've never seen it go bad by itself. It's useless system. PCV sucks :P

Yeah I'm a necroposter. So while changing my valve covers & plugs, this breather hose developed a small crack where it attaches to the front cover. Damn thing was stiff as hell and a pain to remove. I wrapped some electrical tape around the cracked part and put a small clamp on the hose to keep everything in place.

I know it's a blowby hose but how important is it? My ghetto fix seems to working fine; no vacuum leaks when I sprayed some brake clean into the area. I really don't want to pull the intake again just to replace it. If it doesn't hold, I may cut out the easily accessible piece of hose and splice in some new hose via a coupler.

That hose is to connect both valve covers so that blowby is sucked out of both covers by one PCV valve. Otherwise, you would have to have two PCV valves, one for each cover. It is not a vacuum hose. You could take it off and throw it away if you wanted and there would be no vacuum leak. But if you did that, you would notice sludge building up in the one valve cover.

Phew, that's a relief! Just going to leave everything as-is then. Thanks for the info
