Blower broke the gearbox.....again.

So, I am faced with the 'ol too much HP through a stock 5 speed trans....again. My previous open diff 5 speed failed at roughly 98K miles.

My solution was to source & install a VLSD from a 2001 AE. Installed the current VLSD 5 speed at 98k.

Put many .556 & .308 AP projectiles through the old open diff gearbox.

Now the car has 146xxx miles on it and has been eating 12 psi since 65k mi. The "new" jy VSLD trans is now making that familiar whining.

Hard to get into first gear & is bleeding gear oil from both output shafts ( I installed new OEM shaft seals before installing) as well as from between the bell housing. Im thinking the input shaft bearing is almost toast.

Now, I happen to have a 90k mile 6 speed trans from a 2005 Altima SE-R. I also have the trans mount, shifter, cables, & other parts in my stash.

My questions;

Can this 6 speed be mated to a VQ30DE-K in a 2001?

Will a different clutch be needed? Flywheel? TOB?

Has anyone done this yet?

Should I just have this VLSD 5 speed rebuilt?

I'm thinking the boosted 3.0 and the 6 speed gearbox would compliment each other quite well. The motor is still running strong & compression is still excellent across all cylinders despite being boosted for 50k ish miles.

Input from people who have experience with this swap/mod would be most helpful.

Also, I will be swapping/ doing this myself so labor is not something to take into account.

Thanks!

I've been looking into this & there isn't anyone around my area that offers cryo treatment for these gear sets.

I have read about the Par Engineered gear sets in the supercharged/turbo section, but haven't been able to get in touch with them.

I guess its time to swap again. Local JY's here don't have any on hand that are in acceptable shape.

Quotes range from $650 for an open diff with 200k miles to $1050 for a VLSD with unknown mileage. Crazy prices IMHO.

If this becomes much more of a PITA I might just part this thing out & move over to BMW or Infiniti.

power is not what's making your input shaft bearing fail. it just happens, lots of power or not.

yes you can use that 6spd, but i think you need to change the bell housing, i think there some definitive posts on the subject in the all motor section. yes you'd need a different clutch and flywheel and throw out bearing. it's definitely not just as simple as swapping in another 5spd.

you could have that 5spd rebuilt if you wanted.

I bet you would be very happy with an HLSD 6 speed swap.
Deloa84 is making timing rings here pretty soon to get around that problem.
12psi? Sounds like fun.

Could you elaborate on the cause of the input shaft bearing failure? It just seems to correlate with this car specifically. The other A32's Ive owned never had this issue.

I have looked into the rebuild & the quotes Ive gotten so far have been 1100-1500. Now, its not really the $, its the quality of the work that I question.

Which leads me into the next issue with a rebuild. The few that actually have the technical skills to perform a rebuild will only offer me a "To the curb warrantee". I think my mistake there was to allow them to look under the hood. I should have just taken the trans there and not the car. Lesson learned.

If the 6 speed swap is a viable/reliable option I may go that route. Time for some reading in the all motor section!

Thanks for the insight!

Also, those are some seriously impressive numbers in you sig.

Im going to explore the HLSD option. If the timing rings simply require some cutting/welding, I can make that happen.

A DE-K on 12psi with a proper tune and bolt-ons is a neat experience. Everyone should experience it at some point.
