is it both the front and back?

if just the back maybe previous owner tried to wire it with the blinkers and got the brakes instead? i'd think it'd be harder to get the front ones to do that though

It may be that someone changed one og the front turn signal light bulbs and put the wrong light bulb in. The front turn signals use an 1157 lamp, which is a dual filament bulb. The probably put in an 1156 lamp, which is a single element bulb.

I have to occasionally hit my rear ones with my hand... They are aftermarket ebay ones though with built in light bulb

Had a similar problem with my Saab once. Almost all the lights on the car started acting funny. The brights didn't work and the turn signals didn't blink, just glowed steady when activated and it was due to a rusted off ground (or "earth") bolt in the rear hatch area. There was a leak there once and the moisture rusted through the bolt that a ground wire was attached to. I just relocated the wire to another nearby bolt. Check your vehicle ground points, it could be as simple as that.
