are California and federal emission exhaust the same besides the fact that its CA?

im looking to do my exhaust system and im going to buy it on ebay to save some money obviously.... i checkd the white sticker under the hood and is says at the bottom california emissions applicable for ......... etc etc ... i live in massachusetts and my car doesnt go through emissions testing for inspections any more as of this year. so my question here is are the flanges and the system itself the same besides the fact that its CA or Fed Emissions. meaning if i get a resonator for a fed emissions and my car is CA emissions will it still fit? i was going to change from the flex back to the muffler and im looking at about $300 or so minus the labor ...but working at a collision shop is the least of the problems. im just curious.. any one have answers

From my understanding, CA emissions are more stricter than the other states. For example my Max is registered in KS but I live temporarily in CA. In KS I can add a CAI and other engine performance add ons for power without any worries because KS does not have any emissions testing to be concerned about.

Here in CA you have to get your car smog tested every year and meet CA emissions which are very strict. If during testing your car is found to be putting out too many pollutants it must be taken off the road until the system is fixed and in compliance.

I went to a K&N store in Fontana, CA to buy a system for my car and they wouldn't sell it to me even though my car is registered in KS. They'd have to mail it to my address in KS.

Now to answer your question, if the system is CA emissions compliant, it should be good for all the other states as well because CA emissions goes above and beyond what the others require.

The catalytic converter and back are the same for Cali & Fed cars.

The y-pipe and the pre-cats are different between Cali & Fed cars.
