Only big big big issue with the VQ35DE used in 02-03 is the oil consumption.

I can't see a reason why you'd get the VQ30 engines now days, slow as f8ck

Also the VQ35DE were used in so many FWD Nissan cars the cost of the engine's not that bad but labour intensive for swapping it out.

I owned a gen 4 for a bit and liked the smoothness and lack of oil burning but ultimately it wasn't fast enough for me

I'd go with the 02-03 personally. After converting mine from AT to MT and putting in a VQ35DE with low mileage the thing's awesome. The HLSD feature also was surprising efficient for a FWD car.

Of the two, I would rather take the 2000, assuming it's mechanically in good shape.
I absolutely hate rust! Depending on your area, it can be very hard to find a clean-body 5th gen.

I've had the headlights out several times w/out removing the bumper on my 02. It's a little tricky but not too bad.

I own one of each an have for over 10 years. The 02 6-speed is modded and the 00 is stock auto. They've both been amazingly reliable cars. If you're mostly interested in looks just go with the 00. The 02 is faster but the 00 is no slouch either. It has plenty of power and more than the average family sedan.

Its all about what's important to you. If speed is what you want then go with the 02. I've driven auto 00 and it's SLOW. But if you are just basing your decision off condition then the 00 looks to be in better shape!!

Not a pro but aren't the gen 4 without the included security crap like before 98 some of the lightest maxima around?

I had a 95 SE 5-speed (1st of the 4th gens) before my 02. I drove them back to back several times before getting rid of the 95. The 02 is definitely faster.

The 95 felt as fast or faster than my wifes 00 auto though.
