Nice! Looking forward to reading how/what parts you used. Is there a flange connecting the res to the bpipe?

Is the 5th gen tunnel tighter than a 4th?

I've got a 30x6" magnaflow under my i30.

so, your blog says that you haven't put on the full 3 inch setup? i thought the 3 inch res and stock exhaust flanges wouldn't mate up correctly? what are you using for the current muffler?

I originally bought the 30x6" magnaflow for my i35 without measuring. Once I measured it, I saw that there was no way that it would fit (lengthwise) under my car. So I went the 18x6" magnaflow.

Well my friend's camera that I've used for years to collect exhaust clips and videos on my YT had been stolen

I'm just gonna buy the same one used when I see it on ebay.

No.

See that brace w/ 4 bolts on each side? It's kinda integral to chassis stiffness, most 5th genners have removed it for weight savings but I'm a cornering enthusiast and I do not want this car to get even more flexible.

The answer to your first question is yes.

The answer to your second question is no.

And third... See photo.... There is no muffler, just the Jones resonator. (Which is why the answer to the first question is yes)

This question raises a good point, I will re-edit the post because It'd be foolish of me to assume everyone knows what I have on the car at all times.

Just for clarity sakes....

OBX Headers
3" Resonated Test pipe
The first section of a 3" catback.

It can fit, just have to remove that brace, which personally I find necessary.

But this 26" is as big as it's going to get on a 5th gen w/o removing that brace.

After a good 500 miles, I'd have to say I really like it. Makes race caw noises, and just barely quiet enough under 3k to have a phone conversation w/o too much noise.

On the flip side... It's not part of my vision for this car, would I do it again for another build? Hell yes, just not this one.

On that note I've opted to go w/ the delta flow 50 series flowmaster muffler, after a dyno with this setup (to see if there are any power losses/gains w/ or w/o a muffler)

Louvered.

That will quiet anything down. That's all I've ever used in the past.

Surprisingly after the headers it cut the volume almost in half, from "omg I can't even go above 5k w/o bleeding from my ears" to "7k is fun"

Open downpipe cruising on the highway around 3k-rpm is about wot above 7k-rpm with the resonator.

For those of you who have made the struggle of driving an open downpipe....

Thanks for posting the parts you used. Which way is the resonator facing? Meaning, do the louvered openings face the air flow? Or do the openings face the rear of the car?

It's my understanding that that brace is for side impact collisions....it transfers the energy from one side of the car to the other when hit. Can you really tell a difference in cornering if it's off? Although I suppose if you've never removed it you wouldn't know..... Only curious because I'm considering removing mine so I can get a larger resonator on my 5th gen, but don't want the car to be even worse from a cornering perspective.

Underside of your car looks so clean!

Missing the rear muffler and it's still quiet...Definitely an airflow obstructing louvered unit...

Openings towards the exhaust, the shop man said it would be quieter but would kill the stuffins over an extended period of time.

I said what the hey, if it kills my $80 resonator I'll just have to break down... unbolt it... and buy another

As for the brace, I'll give it a shot, I need a dose of my own medicine every once in awhile. I have to take it off to make a spacer for it anyways.

Well if you want to experiment.... unbolt her, turn her around, and give her a spin facing the other way... how much louder will she be?

What's the spacer for?

I ran it at the shop both ways, more rasp, not really louder, but this was only about 10 ft away. DB meter was too close to say it made a real difference in loudness.

More clearance on the 3" piping, random moments the exhaust hits that brace and shakes the whole dang car.

Only need like a 1/8th of an inch or so.

That's not a reversivible bolt in! The aft end of the muffler is welded to the side exiting pipe....Non versatile setup well that is without cutting the crap out of it! Done louvered before in the Cherry Bomb brand!

No muffler yet. This is just with what you see above.

Cold start and drive off.
