5.5 Running Rich

Hey everyone, I'm new here. I picked up an 02SE 6MT with 159kmiles on it last week. The previous owner told me he was active here and referenced me to the site for extensive information and DIY stuff. I bought it from him with some mods, specifically those that may pertain to this question are: NWP VIAS blocker, k&n GAB, high-flow cats and catback, and an intake spacer.

He informed me it ran a little rich when I picked it up and from my understanding they did run slightly rich from the factory? Wondering what my options would be to help solve the issue. I'd love to get a tuner for it but when I went through the tuning forum I was really confused. I'm coming from a mustang where obviously there are a ton of performance part providers and plug-n-play tuners, but it looks like things are different in the Maxima.

I did my best to look around through the forums and couldn't find much.

Thanks

Might ping / knock blah blah if you're driving like a idiot.

I have more mods than that and untuned the car still gets 500-600 km a tank and normal driving there's no knocking or pinging.

Don't worry about it

3.0L here, 375-400km's for 3/4 of a tank. Mine runs rich as well, in the works of figuring it out.

I don't "drive like an idiot" but my driving has been more spirited being that I just got it a few days ago and I'm getting to know it/having fun with it.

I never understand why people put distance per tank. That is a wholly inaccurate way to measure fuel consumption. You have to use miles or kilometers per gallon or liter. Jesus Christ...

To the OP how do you know it is running rich? Just because the old owner said so? You have no idea...if you suspect it running rich then find a way to measure your specific af ratio and see if it within spec.

As far as tuning options there is one. Check the naturally aspirated or forced induction performance sub forums within this website.

How do I know? Exhaust tips covered in buildup, and when you exit the car after driving, you can catch a hint of a gas smell.

All subjective. It could be a gas leak or your are burning oil.

Go back to my post and do some more research into measuring your AF ratio and use a tuning device if needed.

My mechanic is back in school for his final year I believe, learning about my issue sort of... No fix yet, last calculation was right around 12L/100km. Can't remember the exact number, 11.96-something... That's granny driving 40% city/ 60% highway! Small improvements, from 16L/100km to 12!

How does he know it's running rich, (AFR) and do you know your MPG's at least?
