I think you miss understood him because there's zero need to put a new boot on a coil on plug.

Not always true, my old ones on my acuras coils were dry rotted and kept sticking to the plug when i would pull the coils out (was so annoyong!) i had to use long needle noses to get it out.

I always used di-electric grease but the boots no longer had elasticity where the boot hugged the coil. I believe they were stock coils and they that 187xxx on them

I've seen that before but never on a Maxima. These boots are put together really well. Anything's possible but it's not something I would prepare for on these cars. Just this year I did plugs on both my cars. One at 200k, the other at 300k (240k on the coils) and they looked brand new.

sebastian2041, If you're worried about it just pull one of the front coils and see what it looks like. There's nothing to it. Remove the cover and it's one 10mm bolt.

Just ask him to show you what he's talking about so you can take it with you to the parts store

I saw boots for sale when I priced spark plugs too with NGK. What's involved in replacing the boots? My biggest concern is making sure the rocker arm covers are sealed and that the O-ring seals around the spark plugs are sealed. I'd make sure there's no oil leaking into where the spark plugs are.

The boots are part of the coils. When you pull the coil, the boot is the part that slips over the end of the spark plug.

I believe you're more likely to damage the coils by screwing with them than you are to see any need for new boots.

Replacing the valve cover gaskets is a different job but it's a good time to do it while you're already in there. You'll have to buy the tube seals separately from the VC gaskets but they are available.

Good deal. That sounds like the kit to go with. I've had good luck with Felpro too.

Make sure to take your time during this job. Chances are some bolts and hoses will break in the process due to age so be prepared.

Yes, boot should be replace, since they are made of rubber material, they do tend to lose elasticity and tear easily, I had to replace the boots when one of the boot got separated from the coil when I was trying to change the plug at 80k and when I tried to get the boot out, it got ripped so I ended up replacing all the boots since it would make sense that they are all the same age.

It's a 5th Generation. How many miles? If it's more like 200xxx miles, you would more likely want to double check the entire fuel delivery system and check the fuel hoses from the tank pipe to the fuel injectors You would probably want to re-seal the fuel injectors too. They could begin leaking too when you shut the car off. It will leave your oil smelling like fuel.
