Clunk when turning steering wheel all the way

When cranking the wheel all the way in a tight area like a parking lot, how come there's a pronounced thunk from the stops on the rack? All cars have stops to prevent damage to the rack but they don't clunk like this. I've heard greasing the stops may help. Can anybody confirm this? Of course I don't always crank the wheel all the way but it's hard to avoid sometimes when these cars have such a garbage turning radius.

Have you looked to see if the plastic bump covers are intact?

This is where they are and what they look like:

If they are damaged or missing, that would contribute to a clunk when they are hit.
