2003 Maxima Recommended Tune Up List

Hi, I have a 2003 Maxima SE with about 110,000 miles. I am looking to get many more years out of her and want to do a good preventative tune up. I don't know a lot about cars so I'm trying to avoid getting screwed by a mechanic. My budget is around $500. I asked a friend who is is very knowledgeable and he gave me a list of things to consider.

I know spark plugs are the #1 priority, but wanted to hear your opinion on this list and to prioritize what is essential now to keep me around $500 and what can wait a bit. Could you look at the list below and tell me what you think? Which of these do you strongly advise I prioritize now? I realize you have no idea the condition of the parts on my car, but just based on the age and mileage.

TUNE UP LIST

6 Sparkplugs (Needs to be done by professional mechanic because the top of the engine has to be taken apart)

You will also need an intake manifold gasket because the intake manifold has to be removed to get to the rear 3 spark plugs.

Check and set new spark plugs to the proper gap.

Check and adjust idle speed using the Consult II scan tool. Ask the service advisor to record the speed before the adjust and after the adjustment. The adjustment must be set under the IAC valve screen...so a dealer scan tool is definately needed.

Check and adjust ignition timing using the Consult II scan tool.

Check and report condition of the air filter.

2 Belts:
Serpentine belt for power steering.
Serpentine belt for air condition, alternator & idler pulley.

Replace Oxygen Sensors for preventative maintenance. (There are 4 oxygen sensors on your vehicle)

Transmission fluid and filter change if applicable.

Flush power steering and change fluid. And if it hasn't been done it is a good idea to flush and replace your coolant fluid and thermostat.

Drain and refill ATF (where applicable)

Change fuel filter

Yes, spark plugs are due at your mileage. Removing the upper intake looks intimidating but it's really just nuts and bolts. There's not much too it if you're at all handy.

You will also need an intake manifold gasket because the intake manifold has to be removed to get to the rear 3 spark plugs.

It's up to you. The gasket can be reused several times. With your low miles I'd reuse it.

Check and set new spark plugs to the proper gap.

Modern plugs come pregapped but I always check just out of habit. I haven't had to gap a new plug in many years. It only takes a few seconds to check.

Check and adjust idle speed using the Consult II scan tool. Ask the service advisor to record the speed before the adjust and after the adjustment. The adjustment must be set under the IAC valve screen...so a dealer scan tool is definately needed.

I wouldn't worry about this unless you're having idle problems. The IAC valve (IACV) was deleted in 2002 when they went with a computer controlled throttle so you don't even have one. The computer automatically checks the throttle position every time you start the car.

Check and adjust ignition timing using the Consult II scan tool.

Not unless you're having driveability issues.

Check and report condition of the air filter.

Check it every oil change.

2 Belts:
Serpentine belt for power steering.
Serpentine belt for air condition, alternator & idler pulley.

Not a bad idea.

Replace Oxygen Sensors for preventative maintenance. (There are 4 oxygen sensors on your vehicle)

Absolutely not. Leave them alone unless there's an issue. o2 sensors can last well over 200,000 miles and they aren't cheap. When they do fail you'll get a "check engine" light but you wont be stranded.

Transmission fluid and filter change if applicable.

Not a bad idea

Flush power steering and change fluid. And if it hasn't been done it is a good idea to flush and replace your coolant fluid and thermostat.

You can flush the PS but it's not a priority. Changing the coolant is a good idea but I wouldn't flush unless the fluid looks really bad. Leave the thermostat alone unless there's an issue.

Drain and refill ATF (where applicable)

Discussed above. Transmission fluid.

Change fuel filter

Not necessary unless you have issues.

I would also check the valve covers for leaks. Changing the plugs is a great time to change the rear VC gasket since the intake is already off. Unless you know it's been done I would at least do the rear since you may not have to remove the intake for another 100,000 miles. If the original seal isn't leaking now it will be soon. Swap the tube seals too. You can do the front any time.

Also. search here for "clogged pre-cats" It's a common issue on 3.5 liter cars and can cause big problems.

Clean the MAF with some MAF cleaner spray. You can easily do this yourself and give it a spray at every oil change. Search this site for a "how too".

also change pcv valve its like a $3 part along with a new air filter. Not sure if you have to change the intake manifold gasket each time you remove it because i havent and ive removed it several times.

Derrick pretty much nailed it. Make sure to only use NGK plugs.

I'd also do a brake fluid flush and throw a bottle of Techron into the gas tank.
