Cruise Control Issues

2001 Maxima, 161k:
Is it normal for the cruise control two very speed and sometimes just start losing speed? I'm having problem after problem with this new Maxima it's my first. And since I drive a lot, this cruise control problems really annoying. Any ideas?

Yes, because they're two very different vehicle CC systems

But they really are re: DBW/cable.

If you are driving in hilly terrain, the speed will vary maybe 2 - 3 mph and probably more in mountainous terrain.

If you are on fairly flat land, and the car looses speed, there is a good likelihood that you have a vacuum leak. Check the hose that runs between the vacuum pump behind the left side strut tower and the actuator in the middle of the firewall. Make sure that the hose has not become brittle and check the ends that they haven't split.

A vacuum leak was my first thought, especially since idle rpms change. I just wasn't sure where to start looking for hoses for that and the cruise control. Thanks.
