Mileage? Auto or manual?

Clattering could be from the engine, exhaust, or suspension. You gotta be more descriptive. Jack up the car and start looking for loose parts. Bang around the exhaust to look for a broken heat shield.

If its anything like a strong vibration is could be the torque converter or something to do with the transmission

Yes, any one of the above, plus axles or engine mounts.

could be from the exhaust like a rattle from one of the pre cats breaking apart in the housing and just rattling around. I had an issue like that and it was difficult to diagnose because it sounded like it was a timing chain noise or an engine bearing noise, as most shops will have you believe.

could be idler pulley classic rattle soudns like metal exhaust around 1700-2100 RPM , strong change in throttle removes noise, only consistent grandma throttle will make the rattle.
