manual transmission compatibility

Many 2002/03 trannys had a weak 3dr gear syncro which leads to a grinding when shifting hard into 3rd.
A better bet is to get a 2004-2006 tranny. They fixed the issue in 04. Even better is to get one with HLSD.

1995-2001 five speeds will all bolt up to a VQ30/DE-K. The 4th gens use (and some 2000 models built in '99) a VSS in the trans for the speedo. IIRC the '01s used the ABS sensors instead of a VSS. So yeah, anything in that year-range will work.

Thanks for the info @4thGenTuner Also according to the haynes repair manual 95 and up manual transmissions have the same bell housing bolt pattern. The manual covers 93-2004 maximas. I am assuming that the bolt pattern for the manual transmissions for the 3.5 have the same bolt pattern as well. Correct me if I am wrong. If they do, do you know what parts would hsve to be swapped out to go with one from a later model?.or maybe even direct me to someone who may know if you can't answer the question. Also. Did some of 02-03 maximas come with the 5 spd manual transmission. Trying to weigh different options. Thanks again in advance.

Step 2. Find the FSM for your specific model year.
Step 3. Read the FSM.
Step 4. ?????
Step 5. Profit/Swap trans & drive happy.
All bs aside, if you're wondering if a 5 speed will bolt up to a VQ35, the answer is yes.....kinda. None of the 02-03 cars came with a five speed. Some altimas had the VQ35 and 5 speed, but the mounts are different. If I were you I would stick to what came in the car. Keep it simple unless you're ready to do some custom motor mount work. So to be clear, VQ30 = 5 speed VQ35 = 6 Speed. If you have a VQ35, find a newer HSLD 6 speed.
Good luck & happy motoring.
