car starts and then dies

my 2001 maxima is having trouble running. it starts just fine but immediately dies unless you keep the revs up. once i finally am able to coax it out on the road it runs rough and idles around 400 rpm at the stoplights. i just got this car and could really use some help. thanks!

Any codes? Try cleaning the MAF.

As Cornholio said, it's almost certain that your IACV needs to be replaced.
- Check the codes, and make sure you don't have the dreaded P0505.
- Read the document in my signature - read it before doing any repairs.
- To replace your IACV, only use the OEM/Hitachi unit; you can buy it from RockAuto.com.

took it to the parts shop and they ran all the codes. the bulk of the codes were oxygen sensor codes and evap emissions stuff. i didnt get a print off so i dont know the exact numbers of the codes. but i did notice the smell of gas fumes coming from the bak side of the car by the rear driver door.

Found the problem! the flex boot pipe between the air box and the throttle was cracked which was letting in air after the sensor and fouling up the sensor reading.

I found mine recently ripped just as you described. You might want to check your motor mounts as this was the cause of my boot ripping.
